I have always loved Animal Crackers, slightly sweet with a crisp texture. As a child not much older than Shirley Temple in Curly Top, I have fond memories of grocery shopping with my grandmother. She would treat me to a sweet. My choice would always be the box of animal crackers. The adorable animals housed in their purselike container would travel with me through the day. I would take them out to play, and of course nibble their heads and toes.
Times have changed...Barnum's Animal Crackers now have a new package design, a victory for PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. My beloved crackers have been caged for 116 years are now roaming freely next to one another on sweeping savanna. It's nice to see them walking in the wild, to be enjoyed for many more years to come.

The "Spirit of Fiesta" and "Junior Spirit of Fiesta" will surely delight the audience! Jacques Becker (1906-1960) first worked as an assistant to Jean Renoir in the 1930's. This was considered Renoir's peak period. During the Nazi occupation of France, Becker became a film director in his own right. He also joined the Comité de libération du cinéma français. The most well-known members are Jacques Becker, Pierre Blanchar, Louis Daquin, Jean Painlevé, and Jean-Paul Le Chanois. From August 1-16, the newly remodeled Film Forum in New York City will be featuring retrospective of his work. From Antoine and Antoinette to the prison escape Le Trou, this will surely be an event you won't want to miss. Review “Jacques Becker was the most reflective filmmaker of his generation, and the most scrupulous. If criticism taught him nothing, it was because he had already assessed and reassessed all the problems in his own head. For a long time he was assistant-director to Jean Renoir, who liked to let him do cameos. In Boudu, Becker, young and thin, sits on a bench, puts his head in his hands, reflects, raises his arms toward heaven and declaims, ‘Poet, take thy lute and give me a kiss.’ In Grand Illusion, he is an English officer who crushes his watch in rage rather than have it confiscated by the Germans. This is Becker as revealed by Renoir, the great revealer: restless, anguished, elegant, lyrical, nervous, tormented.” – François Truffaut #becker #filmforum #filmfestival
C.A.R. Seeks More Homeownership Opportunities for Young Families The California Association of REALTORS® (C.A.R.) is embarking on an historic effort to increase homeownership opportunities. C.A.R. is going to qualify an initiative for the November 2018 ballot which will allow senior homeowners (55 years of age and older) to keep all or most of their Proposition 13 property tax savings when they move. This is important because seniors, who are often on a fixed income, fear they will not be able to afford a big property tax increase if they sell their existing home and buy another one, discouraging them from ever moving. As a result of this “moving penalty” almost three-quarters of homeowners 55 and older haven’t moved since 2000. C.A.R.’s portability initiative would allow senior homeowners to transfer their property tax base from their current residence to a replacement residence located anywhere in California. The measure, if approved by voters, will let thousands of seniors, currently “locked into” their homes by low property tax rates purchase a home that will better suit their needs while expanding the housing inventory for young families seeking to buy a home. According to the California Legislative Analyst's Office, tens of thousands additional homeownership opportunities will occur annually. It was a foggy Solstice Saturday. We had heard all the trails were open. We were a bit reluctant to head to the Romero Trail as it seemed as though it would be washed out and no green. We were in for a wonderful surprise. We started up the road part of the trail, which is nicely cleared towards the single track. The single track trail is back in place. There has been some work done to the entrance, and from there it was fairly easy to navigate to the top. There are some parts which are completely unfamiliar, and many sections which are very familiar. There are trees, water and new growth. It was great to see cars parked, and meet friends on the trail both on foot and on bike. It made everything feel a bit more normal. Treat yourself and "Go for a Hike"! #hike #romerotrail #solstice The next best thing to be a native of Santa Barbara is to be almost local. Approaching forty years qualifies as almost local--doesn't it?
'On February 4th we were part of a team of about forty people who helped shovel mud from the La Casa de Maria Chapel. It is amazing what 30 shovels and ten wheelbarrow can accomplish in a short days worth of work. Abe's message is simple in this new natural order we need to pitch in and help each other if we are to survive. People of all generations have differing opinions about what their homes says about them as a person. For most Americans, owning a home is a sign of success and accomplishment.
We have often thought baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies just before a showing would give the home a warm and cozy feel. It would make buyers feel at home and stay a bit longer. We were wrong.
Studies have shown baked goods have a complex scent which can distract homebuyers . They will unconsciously try to figure out what the scent is rather than concentrate on the home. Try simple scents, such as pine, vanilla or citrus. They are less distracting, and easier to process. If you want to sell the outdoor lifestyle, bring the scent of outdoor in! |
