Something about getting older mellows us out. I know I feel it as I approach my next big milestone birthday.
Funny thing is, I think it also happens with dogs. Oliver, our pal and trusty mascot, went for his yearly check-up at the vets. I was shocked when she said "he is middle age now, you know". That explained it! He is now the middle aged mellow dog. Oliver has always been a pretty friendly dog. Occasionally in his younger days when we were hiking or at the beach, if he felt threatened by a larger dog, he would stand up on his hind legs and show his fangs. It was pretty funny as most large dogs just ignored him. He is only 17 pounds, so even when standing on his hind legs he isn't that big. We affectionately started calling him "White Fang". Now that he is "middle age" he wants to be a pack dog. No more white fang for Oliver. It's actually kind of cute. Now on beach days he loves running with the pack.

This morning, while drinking my coffee, I was perusing the UCSB Arts and Lectures line-up for the 2018-19 season. UCSB treats our community to many thought provoking lectures. I have been fortunate to enjoy many of them. Joe Biden, Gloria Steinem, Madeline Albright and Jeffrey Toobin who is spoke so passionationately about the Supreme Court.
The one person I would have loved to heard speak is John McCain. “Nothing in life is more liberating than to fight for a cause larger than yourself, something that encompasses you but is not defined by your existence alone.” -Faith of My Fathers:A Family Memoir Senator Chuck Schumer said it best. "I am mourning, America is mourning, the world is mourning the loss of one of the truly great men of recent decades. You don’t meet many great men as you go through life, John McCain was one of them for his patriotism, for his strength, for his ability to speak truth to power and for him to do personal acts of kindness, quietly, over and over again. I knew him well, he was one of my closest friends in the Senate." We will miss you John McCain. I have always loved Animal Crackers, slightly sweet with a crisp texture. As a child not much older than Shirley Temple in Curly Top, I have fond memories of grocery shopping with my grandmother. She would treat me to a sweet. My choice would always be the box of animal crackers. The adorable animals housed in their purselike container would travel with me through the day. I would take them out to play, and of course nibble their heads and toes.
Times have changed...Barnum's Animal Crackers now have a new package design, a victory for PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. My beloved crackers have been caged for 116 years are now roaming freely next to one another on sweeping savanna. It's nice to see them walking in the wild, to be enjoyed for many more years to come. Oliver is glued to the screen watching Robert Reffkin, the founder and CEO of Compass, speaking live about the exciting news of the merger between Compass and Pacific Union. Pacific Union, which has grown to be the largest independent brokerage in California. It has 1,700 agents in 54 offices. Compass, which launched in 2012, boasts more than 4,000 agents. We are excited to welcome PU to the Compass family! |
